Emergence at the Turner Contemporary this Friday
You are warmly invited to the debut performance of Emergence on Friday 20th April, at Turner Contemporary, Margate. There will be 3 performances of the work between 6 and 10pm.
Emergence is the culmination of a year-long project that started with the creation of simple musical ideas and developed into a collaborative audiovisual performance featuring oil paint animation by Em Cooper. The performance will premiere two pieces the first ‘Water States’ is a piece for solo piano inspired by Emergent phenomena within the changing states of water performed by Olga Stezhko. The second ‘Emergence’ is an audiovisual work featuring visceral oil paint animation performed by soprano Red Gray.
Emergence
I’ve been working on this exciting project for a while now. It’s a collaboration between myself and artist/animator Em Cooper inspired by Emergence. I will be posting more about the creative concept behind the piece in future posts but the basic idea is that we start the composition off with some simple musical ideas and then through the process of feedback from all artists involved we take it in turns to add to the work and make changes to it so that it slowly evolves without anyone being able to predict the form of the final piece. We have posted some images, video and audio from the early stages of the composition which you can check out in this post. As the work changes we will continue to post updates so that you can see and hear the work as it evolves.

New Music
I should probably be posting up pictures from my recent recordings and rehearsals, but every time I go I forget to do this, must be something to do with concentrating on getting the music right.
Instead of that I’ve decided to share some mixes from Apartament 18 which I’ve been listening to loads recently, a mix from 8 tracks and another recent discovery from Son Lux
Sketches & New Works
I’ve put up some new audio clips of sketches and studies from my next ep, and also some early ideas for a series of performances I’m doing onĀ Emergence, more about that soon. You can listen here.
New Scores and Performances
I’ve been working on a new performance series in collaboration with animator Em Cooper. The series kicks off with a performance at The Turner Contemporary, with other dates TBC. I’ve also been working on a follow up to Grains, featuring some new works for digitally manipulated, guitar, strings, piano and voice. The Ep will be released with the performance scores and a series of limited edition graphic scores.
